This is the result of a grossly incompetent leadership.

True, inflation may be global, but the local situation is worsened by an absence of robust institutions and market structures that can ride the otherwise industrious folks (like this mama) through the hard times.

Unfortunately, the failed leaders are put in office for all the wrong reasons by a largely gullible citizenry that may, sadly, include the said mama. I would not be surprised (though I’d love to) that she has voted for the veteran failures more than once. And that four years hence, she’ll be caught up in the strange passions of electioneering and probably send back to high office the same bungling bloke.

Yes, it is nice to have a little help from outside, but it is not really necessary. That is the lazy option.
The sustainable option, and not a very fun one, is for you and I to de-school our people from a serf-mentality. To clearly make them see the direct link between their electoral choices and the subsequent (dis)enabling environment. To increase their pool of knowledge that will help them make wiser choices.

There is no doubt in my mind that many of the citizens have a vibrant and enterprising spirit. But this small band of buccaneering leadership!

I also think ignorance plays a major role in this, do you think most people care about why we elect our leaders, i was just thinking that, and now that you are in Kenya i hope you concur with me, one of the reason why certain leaders were elected into parliament is because they were popular during the campaign not because they would serve any good to their community.
