Somebody do something

“I put a lot of salt in the vegetables when I am cooking to limit my children from eating a lot.” These are the words of a woman trying to feed her family.

But does she know that too much salt can lead to high blood pressure which can as result lead to strokes and heart attacks in future? So while she gets rid of one problem she is slowly poisoning herself and her kids, though unknowingly.

Poverty and high rate of inflation has led her to do the only thing she thinks is right to feed her family.

She goes on to add that at times she has to wait until it is 11 o’clock so that the breakfast she makes for the family also serves as lunch, because they can hardly afford to have three decent meals in a day.

And her’s is not a special case, day in day out people are going to bed on empty stomachs, due to lack of money. Most are not employed while a large portion of those who are employed can hardly lead a better life due to the increased cost of living.

To save money for shopping that only lasts her for less than a month, Margaret has to do it for a whole month.

She operates a small business where she sells vegetables and groceries, which gives her profits of less than a dollar on a bad day and just over two dollars when its doing well.

So with the inflation going up, and food prices rocketing, a million others like Margaret are scared of what tomorrow may bring and are only hoping for some kind of an intervention.

Now, the question is this, can the governments do anything to save the situation, and should the developed countries do more to help out the developing countries?

I agree to with you? But i think its time our leaders behaved responsibly, mind about their followers and not just about themselves.

This made extremely poignant reading. Hunger and poverty is the biggest threat to humanity. It makes non-humans out of humans like the mother who is sodium poisoning the kids with loads of salt in the food she cooks. I hope and pray that better days for these people are not too far away.

This is the result of a grossly incompetent leadership.

True, inflation may be global, but the local situation is worsened by an absence of robust institutions and market structures that can ride the otherwise industrious folks (like this mama) through the hard times.

Unfortunately, the failed leaders are put in office for all the wrong reasons by a largely gullible citizenry that may, sadly, include the said mama. I would not be surprised (though I’d love to) that she has voted for the veteran failures more than once. And that four years hence, she’ll be caught up in the strange passions of electioneering and probably send back to high office the same bungling bloke.

Yes, it is nice to have a little help from outside, but it is not really necessary. That is the lazy option.
The sustainable option, and not a very fun one, is for you and I to de-school our people from a serf-mentality. To clearly make them see the direct link between their electoral choices and the subsequent (dis)enabling environment. To increase their pool of knowledge that will help them make wiser choices.

There is no doubt in my mind that many of the citizens have a vibrant and enterprising spirit. But this small band of buccaneering leadership!

I also think ignorance plays a major role in this, do you think most people care about why we elect our leaders, i was just thinking that, and now that you are in Kenya i hope you concur with me, one of the reason why certain leaders were elected into parliament is because they were popular during the campaign not because they would serve any good to their community. And now the people who did this are suffering, so i say, education is the key
